Title:
CANCELLED Challenge accepted: a risky future for urban cultural heritage
Content:
If the year 1905 was Einstein’s Annus Mirabilis, as succinctly stated in the introduction to EAA 2019, in the near future there exists a realistic risk for Anni Horribili for the protection, visibility and sustainability of urban historical sites and urban heritage in toto. In 2011 UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape took into consideration wide-ranging changes effected on the urban environment and attempted to regulate their consequences on the cultural heritage of 21st century cities, but also to redefine cultural values and cultural heritage in the cities, adjusted to contemporary understandings of the urban. How we understand and implement the historical landscape approach is critical to the sustainability of the urban heritage as well as the viability of our preservation projects.
In addition, we need to assess whether the existing concept and set of values, such as the list used for designation of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, will be both sufficient and efficient for the value-assessment of urban heritage sites in the next 25 years for them to meet new challenges and risks in an ever-accelerating pace of urban transformation and growth.
The session invites contributions to the following topics, among others:
- urban regeneration and historical landscape
- archaeological sites and monuments in urban settings
- gentrification and consequences for site visibility and reception
- the impact of urban cultural tourism on urban monuments and sites
