Title:
CANCELLED Landscape, Coastscape and Multi-scalar Approach: Analyzing Regional and Interregional Networks on Cyprus and the Levant
Content:
During the Bronze and Iron Ages, the various harbor sites situated along the Levantine coast and Cyprus directed their networks of regional and interregional economic interactions. The problem, however, is how to define the length, direction, and structure of each network. In some instances, various networks entangled creating a complex interregional economic system; yet formed by various politically and economically independent entities.

A good example of network entanglement was the economic system that connected the Akko–Haifa Bay with the Jezreel Valley. In the LB, two harbors were located and coexisted in the Akko–Haifa Bay: Tel Akko and Tell Abu Hawam (TAH). Both sites were independent entities in control of their immediate hinterlands and specific regional multi-polity economic networks. Their networks to the interior, however, met midway, in the Jezreel Valley, at the independent site of Tel Shimron. TAH and Akko were part of a larger interregional economic system in which other coastal sites, such as Enkomi, Ugarit, Sidon, Tyre, and Nahariya, also participated as maritime trade-nodes. These sites also directed their independent political entities and regional networks of interaction.

This session aims to study the length, direction, and structure of the regional and interregional Levantine and Cypriot economic networks and the specificity of their interaction. We thus welcome topics that use networking models and the multi-scalar model, originally developed for the Aegean maritime networks, applied to the Levant and Cyprus. Papers addressing Cyprus and the Levant from a landscape and coastscape archaeological approach will also be accepted.
