Title:
CANCELLED Beyond Dogmatic and Pragmatic: Debating the Relative Impact of Avocational Metal Detecting
Content:
In this Round table discussion, organized by members of the European Public Finds Recording Network, we aim to instigate a Europe-wide debate on avocational metal detecting and public engagement. The basis for debate will be the visions and aims of the EPFRN (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/networks/european-public-finds-recordingnetwork), which are discussed and contextualized at greater length in a forthcoming paper in European Journal of Archaeology (circulated among speakers).
The impact of avocational detecting and its place within heritage management and archaeological research remain contested topics (e.g. Hardy 2017, Deckers et al. 2018). Legal and policy approaches concerning metal detecting differ greatly across jurisdictions, ranging from highly restrictive to liberal or even supportive, and many nuances in between. As such, the issue forms a microcosm of broader debates about public participation (community archaeology, citizen science, participatory heritage) in archaeology (e.g. Dobat 2016; Wessman et al. 2019). We aim to bring together authoritative voices from across the archaeological profession, and with different backgrounds and viewpoints towards metal detecting, to discuss different aspects of the detecting phenomenon.
Following short opening statements from the panelists, the debate will be structured along three questions regarding the impact of avocational detecting:
- The preservation of cultural heritage
- The research value of metal detected finds
- Social and ethical aspects of metal detecting

Confirmed panelists include Pieterjan Deckers (Belgium), Tibor Ákos Rácz (Hungary), Caroline Fredriksen (Norway), and Sergiu Musteata (Moldova). David Wigg-Wolff (Goethe-Universität Frankfurt) will moderate the debate.
