Title:
CANCELLED A World of Difference? Understanding the Mendicant Orders
Content:
The Dominican, Franciscan, Augustinian and Carmelite Orders are well known throughout Europe from at least the 12th century and are distinguished by their close relationship with lay communities. This session will consider the material evidence from excavated examples of these religious establishments across Europe and consider whether there are obvious differences between secular and ecclesiastical assemblages. Are there, for example, differences in the types of pottery vessels represented and can we suggest where they are receiving such material from? Are unusual grave goods present with any of the burials in either the church or graveyard? What is the connection between religious food rules and daily practice, and is this reflected in the material culture? Is it possible to identify dietary differences by analysing the animal bone assemblages excavated from these sites? The organisers welcome paper submissions from across Europe that consider the effect that the arrival of these monastic orders had on the local population.
