Title:
CANCELLED Shaping Collective Buildings and Open Areas in the Middle East
Content:
Collective buildings and communal open areas are distinguished, in the archaeological record, according to their individual or collective nature. Material types, width and height, and location are used to categorize their entity and social value in each of the historical periods.
Their diversity and the difficulties related to their excavation let’s develop different uses and functions that had come to us through papers, monographs and other publications since the nineteenth century. In this session, we would like to develop, thought examples these concepts and argue about the main established types recovered in Near East, Levant and Upper Mesopotamia, since Neolithic times to Middle Ages.
This research aims to redefine the so-called temples or cult spaces, as well as the various defensive and offensive elements or monumental spaces. Other uses such as dwellings, storage spaces, granaries or other collective activities will be treated in order to specify the existing collective types.
