Title:
CANCELLED European Archaeology Days: Sharing Our Archaeological Heritage
Content:
Archaeological heritage is a major societal priority for Europe, whether in terms of protection, conservation, awareness-raising or education. It was in this spirit that the National Archaeology Days were created in France 12 years ago, in response to strong demand from stakeholders and the public alike. For the first time in 2019, the event was extended to include other European countries. Despite the Covid pandemic, the European Archaeology Days (EADs) have continued to grow : in 2022, 30 countries participated, with almost 2,000 separate events being held in Europe.
Organised by the Institut national de recherches archéologiques préventives (Inrap), the EADs took place from Friday 17 to 19 June 2022. They are dedicated to spreading information about research, collections and our archaeological heritage, “from the dig to the museum”. One of the aims of this event is to attract new audiences through “local” events.

In this proposed EAA session, speakers will report on various events held in different European countries, and will show how the European Archaeology Days contribute to the sharing of cultural heritage at the European level. Speakers will also address other issues:

- What kind of tools should be used to raise awareness about our archaeological heritage?
- How can the EADs be further developed by making this event a forum for the public to meet with scientists?
- How can the EADs be turned into a truly European event notwithstanding the diversity of archaeological practices and policies across Europe?

Finally, the floor will be opened for a debate on how the European Archaeology Days might be further developed. How might the JEA be utilised to raise awareness among European citizens about the wider archaeological enterprise, both in terms of the production of knowledge and the conservation of heritage?
