Title:
Beyond Neolithic Wall: Integrated Approaches to Studying the Husbandry Practices in the Mediterranean from the Neolithic to the Chalcolithic Period
Content:
The expansion and integration of the pastoral way of life in the Western and Central Mediterranean resulted in significant changes in society, economy and ideology. The adoption of a new subsistence economy system induced deep socioeconomic changes in the societies that adopt it. Husbandry practices played an important role in this process. For this reason, the modalities of these early Mediterranean farming systems need to be better understood, especially regarding the management and exploitation of domestic animals and zootechnical practices that are at the origin of the agropastoral systems of the following millennia. These systems revolve around two intrinsically linked aspects: the exploitation of animal products and the management of livestock. Moreover, our knowledge of animal exploitation and production systems is still tenuous. It is therefore necessary to investigate them through a multidisciplinary approach that allows us to understand the different methods and strategies that may have been used.
The aims of this session are:
- characterise the early processes of adoption and consolidation of husbandry practices in the Mediterranean basin and central from the Neolithic to the Chalcolithic period.
- evaluate the changes/continuities in the animal management practices to other socioeconomic or ideological aspects in order to question the impact of production systems on social organization.
- Integrate different approaches for the study of livestock systems in the past.
