Title:
CANCELLED The Rocky Road to 3D GIS. Workshop Examples for Working with 3D GIS Solutions in Archaeology and Cultural Heritage
Content:
3D technologies are becoming more and more established in archaeology and cultural heritage and are mostly being used for documentation or dissemination. Until now, only seldom are these 3D outputs used in an integrated 3 dimensional research environment. One way to achieve this would be the use of a 3D GIS. So far, we lack applicable, widely available and handy 3D GIS solutions. This was identified as a major obstacle in past sessions organised by the EAA community for 3D-Archaeology.
3D GIS would open up an entire new dimension of documentation and interpretation of archaeological data. It would be a significant step towards weaving more approachable narratives about the past, while using a maximum of technical possibilities. They could contribute to a better understanding of the archaeological object and its relation to the former location. Moreover 3D GIS would offer the possibility to reproduce large data sets from the same sites and to compare different 3D models with each other more easily. Although solutions are available or being developed independently, no standards for archaeology or “global players” are established. So far, by searching for software solutions, they tend to be either pricey or turn out to be too complex to be used by everyone without further training; or they are simply not available for the recording and working with large 3D datasets.
In this workshop we are looking for existing experience, workflows and 3D GIS solutions that can be used for archaeology and cultural heritage in the field, laboratory, museum and academia. We invite researchers, technicians and staff from different disciplines to present their approaches and solutions. Our aim is to combine already existing ideas and solutions, but also to define future needs for developments for 3D archaeology. The contributions are welcome to include interactive parts (bring your own laptop).
