Title:
MERC Roundtable: Diversifying Medieval Archaeology - What Can We Achieve Together?
Content:
A key aim of the MERC Manifesto is to build a collaborative and inclusive field that empowers diverse communities. This begins with the communities that we are able to develop; communities comprised of practitioners and audiences, professionals and the public. Calling for increased diversity, be that in terms of gender, sexuality, race, or any other characteristic is easy, but it is not an end in itself.
The aim of the 2023 MERC Roundtable is to reflect on what the goal of diversity and inclusion in medieval archaeology should be; what are our motivations for diversifying our profession and audiences, how can we go about achieving this, and what will the payoffs be both for our understanding of the Middle Ages, and our ability to harness the power of its study? This will allow MERC to work strategically to identify the steps that need to be taken to build inspiring and diverse communities that will advocate for, research, and benefit from our understanding of the medieval past.
