Title:
Archaeological Tourism and Sustainability: How Are We Educating, Presenting, and Preventing the Impact of Climate Change on Archaeological Heritage? [Heritage and Tourism community]
Content:
In recent years it has become clear that "climate change has become one of the most significant and fastest growing threats to people and their cultural heritage around the world" (ICOMOS, 19GA 2017/30). Following the mandatory halt to tourism, suffered worldwide due to COVID 19, the need for more sustainable tourism approaches, including the implementation of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has become evident. But how are we addressing these issues in archaeological tourism? Are archaeologists and archaeological site managers aware of the SDGs and are they designing tourism strategies that integrate the goals?

Specifically, are we educating people about the impact of climate change on archaeological sites? Are we integrating climate change impact assessments in our management plans? If not, shouldn't we be including them? What processes are we using to document heritage in risk due to climate change? How do we present our sites in the context of the ongoing climate emergency? How do we educate and raise public awareness of the impact of climate change on archaeological sites and of the role the public can play in mitigating negative climate impacts on archaeological sites? How do we get archaeologists, site managers, and tourists to participate in climate actions that promote sustainable tourism and minimize the impact of climate change on heritage sites.

We invite archaeologists, site managers, museum professionals, tourism professionals, heritage educators, and others connected to and interested in the topic from around the world to provide examples, ideas, and questions to enrich the discussion.
